Last October, business was booming in the refinancing business, mortgage loan officer Shellie Resmondo recalls.
The fixed rate had dropped to 6.5 percent, the lowest since 1965, and people were fighting for appointments to refinance.
This year, things are different.
Those same rates are in the 9 percent range, and the trend for refinancing has dropped off considerably, Resmondo says.
``We're doing about 40 to 50 percent less than what we were doing last year at this time,'' she said.
But Resmondo, 33, still keeps busy. She shuffles back and fourth between 10 offices owned by Beach Fed Mortgage Corp - including a new office that recently opened in Smithfield.
She stays busy as realtors and builders set her up with people who need help financing the building or buying of a new home.
In her spare time, Resmondo likes to practice scuba diving, a new hobby she just took up this summer.
Right now, she dives near some ship wrecks in the area. But her real goal, she said, is to make a dive at a clear, blue island. She and her husband have planned their first dive trip for Key West.
``It's a lot different than diving in a pool,'' she said. ``It gives the feeling of being closed in. But once you're down there, as long as the water is calm, it's easy to get around.''
Resmondo said she decided to take diving lessons because she considered it an adventure.
``It was something stress free that I could do with my husband - something away from the day-to-day things,'' she said.
