DEEP CREEK STUNS CHURCHLAND, 35-0

What was supposed to be a showcase of two top-notch teams in the Southeastern District played out as a one-sided Deep Creek victory, as the Hornets' defense feasted on Churchland and set up all five touchdowns in a stunning 35-0 romp over the Truckers.

The shutout was the first against Churchland since the second game of 1992, when crosstown rival Norcom blanked the Truckers, 46-0.

``The kids remember the game last year, and they've carried that with them until tonight,'' said Deep Creek coach Jerry Carter.

Last season Churchland edged the then 4-0 Hornets in a tough 14-13 contest that kept Deep Creek out of the playoffs.

``We reminded them that a lot of hurtful things were said after that game. It was a real incentive for us,'' Carter said.

Offensively, both teams were anemic in the first quarter. The longest gain for the Truckers was a 9-yard run by quarterback Mike Holland during the opening possession. Deep Creek ran only six plays and never made it past its own 31-yard line.

Once they started adapting to Churchland's offensive scheme, things started heating up for the Hornets. On fourth-and-4, Deep Creek stuffed Holland as he attempted to scramble, giving the Hornets the ball at the at their own 29.

Five plays later at the Truckers' 27, quarterback Arnie Powell hit Cedrec Williams with a perfect touch pass down the right sidelines for the first touchdown of the game.

It was three plays and out on the following possession for Churchland (2-2), and Deep Creek put an exclamation point on the stand when Deodus Harrell blocked Carter Chapman's punt. The ball went bouncing into the end zone and defensive back Kenny Manning fell on it for touchdown and a 14-0 Hornets lead at halftime.

``We've always been good at defending the option,'' said Deep Creek defensive coordinator John Dukes.

So good, in fact, that the Hornets held Churchland's offense to just 63 yards in the first half. ``The emotion was very high tonight, but the kids executed well,'' Dukes said.

While the Truckers fared no better in the second half, Deep Creek (4-0) was just getting started. In the third quarter a fumble recovery by sophomore linebacker George Miller gave the Hornets the ball at their own 46, and Powell capped a 6-play scoring drive with a 24-yard touchdown pass to Kendall Watson.

The fourth quarter for Deep Creek's offense was the Cedrec Williams show, as the senior running back rushed for touchdowns of 20 and 5 yards. The scores were set up by a fumble recovery and an interception by Manning at the Truckers' 20. ILLUSTRATION: Chart
