Three Chesapeake high school students have been named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Seniors Cynthia A. Hanawalt and Lance A. Roy of Great Bridge High and Evangeline Y. Su of Western Branch High entered the program when they took the 1993 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last school year.
Hanawalt, Roy and Su are among nearly 15,000 students competing to advance to the finalist stage. Finalists will be considered for 6,700 Merit Scholarships worth a total of about $26 million.
Three African-American students have been named semifinalists in the National Achievement Scholarship Program for Outstanding Negro Students, also conducted by the non-profit corporation that sponsors the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Selected were seniors Joshua E. Gates of Deep Creek High, Bryan C. Curtis of Great Bridge High and Pamela A. Brown of Western Branch High.
They were among nearly 1,500 semifinalists chosen from a pool of 95,000 black students nationwide who applied for the program when they took the 1993 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. They will compete for 800 scholarships, ranging from $2,000 to $8,000, to be awarded next year. by CNB
