VIRGINIA B. GATLING

Virginia Bard Gatling, 91, of Leigh Hall Retirement Residence, a noted musician, died on Sept. 30, 1994, in Leigh Memorial Hospital. She was a former resident of the Algonquin House.

Mrs. Gatling was born in Norfolk and was the daughter of Lucy Virginia Hanbury and Benjamin Franklin Bard and was the widow of Lance Riddick Gatling. She was a graduate of Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, now Johns Hopkins University, and performed locally as a piano soloist and accompanist and also taught piano for over 50 years. She prepared many pupils for state and national competition. Mrs. Gatling was a member and former organist-choir director of The Church of the Good Shepherd and, prior to that, a member and organist-choir director of Larchmont Methodist Church. She was a charter member and former board member of Scherzo Music Club and Hermitage Foundation and a member of Lochhaven Garden Club, Norfolk Yacht and Country Club and the Princess Anne Country Club.

Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Gatling Beesley of Nokomis, Fla. and Virginia Gatling Lynch of Williamsburg, Va.; a sister, Catherine Bard Willey of Virginia Beach; five grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday at noon in the Gatesville Cemetery by the Rev. Dr. Donald V. Brand. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Church of the Good Shepherd, Norfolk, by the Rev. Ross Wright. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, N.C., is in charge of arrangements.
