When Sweetpea Whitaker won the 147-pound title from McGirt on March 6, 1993, in Madison Square Garden, Buddy McGirt said he lost because he was a one-armed fighter. He underwent surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff in his left shoulder.
McGirt said his shoulder and arm were fine for the rematch, but he threw few left hooks and was not effective with his jab.
It was because of Whitaker, not any traces of the injury.
``He was the better man,'' McGirt said Saturday night after the fight. ``He did what he had to do.''
According to CompuBox, McGirt landed just 24 punches in the last four rounds while being hit steadily by Whitaker. by CNB
