AS DAD WATCHES, DAVIS SCORES 1ST GOAL TO LEAD ODU FIELD HOCKEY

Old Dominion's Gwen Davis made her father's birthday visit twice as happy Sunday by recording her first collegiate goal in a 2-0 shutout victory over No. 12 Massachusetts at Foreman Field.

The senior netted the game-winner for the fourth-ranked Monarchs (8-2-1) with 7:45 remaining in the first half when she rebounded Danielle Chellew's shot off the box and drove it past keeper Hilary Rose.

``It was kind of nice because it's my dad's birthday this weekend,'' Davis said. ``I like to do whatever I can for the team.''

A minute before Davis' goal, Karen Neiss put ODU on the board when she dumped the ball in the corner of the goal on a pass from freshman reserve Takiyah Gettys. Gettys had only been in the game for two minutes - her first of the season - before she hit Neiss.

``I knew she'd play with emotion,'' coach Beth Anders said of Gettys. ``And I knew she wouldn't back down.''

Old Dominion's defense didn't back down either. Massachusetts failed to get a shot on goal in the first half, despite three consecutive corner attempts.

ODU outshot Massachusetts, 11-3, for the game.

The Monarchs will head north next weekend, meeting Providence on Sunday and Northeastern Monday.

ODU returns home on Saturday, October 15th against VCU and hosts Richmond on Sunday, October 16th. Both games begin at 1 p.m. Other field hockey
