Virginia Tech freshman Ken Oxendine, the Group AAA high school player of the year in Virginia last season, will start at tailback for the Hokies Saturday against Temple, coach Frank Beamer said Monday.
Oxendine moved ahead of regular backup Tommy Edwards, who started at Syracuse Saturday in place of injured Dwayne Thomas. Beamer said Thomas is doubtful again with a sprained ankle, and that Oxendine will fill his spot.
``He's had good production when he's been in there,'' Beamer said of Oxendine. ``We're going to give him a chance to have more production this weekend.''
Against Syracuse, Oxendine ran for 78 yards on five carries, including a 62-yard touchdown run. The graduate of Thomas Dale High School also had a 53-yard touchdown against West Virginia on the second carry of his college career.
Beamer is expected to announce today that freshman Tony Morrison, a linebacker from Chesapeake's Indian River High, will be reinstated and should play in the Temple game. Morrison was suspended for the Syracuse game for violating unspecified team rules. by CNB
