The Old Dominion Athletic Conference football race has come down to two teams, Emory & Henry and Guilford, with six games to go. Both are 4-0 overall and will meet Oct. 22 at Guilford.
Emory & Henry's stingy defense has allowed only eight points in two ODAC games and 29 overall. Guilford has won all four of its games on the road.
MORE ODAC FOOTBALL: Hampden-Sydney tailback Wes Dearing took the four-hour LSAT in Charlottesville last Saturday morning before his game at Bridgewater. The senior then drove to Bridgewater to make the second half of the Tigers 21-3 win and rushed for 76 yards, the best rushing half of his career. . . . Emory & Henry tailback J.D. Davis earned offensive player of the week honors as he rushed for 197 yards on 31 carries. . . . Randolph-Macon's Evan Jones defensive honors as he recorded 10 tackles and ran back an interception 55 yards for a touchdown in the Yellow Jackets' 19-0 victory over Washington & Lee.
OLD DOMINION REPORT: The men's soccer went 0-1-1 in the Husky Classic at the University of Washington last weekend. In its first match the Monarchs held previously 14th-ranked Portland scoreless en route to a tie. Junior goalkeeper Nathan Olansen, in his first-year as the Monarch full-time keeper, recorded his first shutout of a ranked team. . . . Olansen suffered a cracked rib in the Monarchs' 4-2 loss to Washington when, going up for a ball, he was undercut. Freshman Michael Rodriquez, a member of the U.S. under-17 team, will replace Olansen in the net. . . . The annual alumni men's soccer game will take place prior to the Old Dominion-George Mason game, Saturday at 5:30 p.m. regionally in saves with 11 through nine games. . . . Old Dominion sailor Evangeline Callahan finished second, losing a tiebreaker, in the MAISA Women's Singlehanded at Navy. She will head for the Women's Singlehanded at MIT, in Boston, Oct. 22-23. . . . The ODU field hockey team, ranked third in the nation, defeated previously third-ranked Connecticut, 3-2. Sue Callahan (Princess Anne) had three assists and has a team-leading 10. The Lady Monarchs (8-2-1) travel to Providence and Northeastern this weekend.
WILLIAM AND MARY SOCCER: Sophomore goalkeeper Lizzie Born of the women's team and sophomore Waughn Hughes of the men's team were named Colonial Athletic Association players of the week. Born recorded shutouts against Rutgers and 11th-ranked Virginia last week. She recorded three saves in her first start against Rutgers and 10 against Virginia. Hughes scored four goals in Tribe victories over American and East Carolina. . . . Whitney Cali (Green Run) scored the game-winning goal against Virginia. She has four. . . . The William and Mary men are ranked fifth in the ISAA Division I men's poll. The Tribe women are ranked ninth in the Soccer America women's poll.
VIRGINIA WESLEYAN SOCCER: The Lady Marlins (9-1, 6-0) are on a roll. Second-year coach Kyle Hannan has led his team to a school-record nine straight wins and a No. 6 ranking in the NCAA South region. Senior Brigitte Bradley (Salem) has stepped up in the midfield with six goals and six assists for 18 points. She scored two goals in a 5-0 win over Chowan. . . . Freshman Marcie Blackbourn leads the Lady Marlins with 13 goals and six assists for 32 points. Sophomores Mandy Nixon (Princess Anne; five goals, three assists, 13 points) and Tatia Boskovich, (four goals, four assists, 12 points) remain steady offensive threats. ``What we have accomplished through our first 10 games is great,'' Hannan said. ``Time will tell just how strong our program really is.'' . . . The Marlins men's soccer team remained unbeaten as it won a big match against previously unbeaten, ninth-ranked Trenton State, 1-0 last weekend in the Manhattanville College Tournament. Sophomore Larry Romaine (Green Run) scored the game-winning goal. . . . Three Marlins - junior forward Evan Whitson, junior forward Jim Hickling (Kempsville) and senior midfielder Mike Duffy have combined for 43 goals and 21 assists for 107 points.
NORFOLK STATE VOLLEYBALL: The Spartanettes went 5-1 in the CIAA Volleyball Roundup in Durham, N.C., last weekend. The Spartanettes recorded victories over Fayetteville State, Livingstone, North Carolina Central, Johnson C. Smith and Winston-Salem State. Their only loss came against Shaw. Holly Gray leads the team with a .265 hitting percentage. Dianne Harris has a team-leading 201 kills and 37 total blocks.
HERE AND THERE: Tim Oates (First Colonial), a senior forward for the Notre Dame men's soccer team, leads the Irish with seven goals and six assists for 20 points. He ranks 15th on the Irish all-time scoring list with 26 goals, 10 assists for 62 points. . . . Meredith Blackman (First Colonial) leads the Longwood field hockey team with five goals for 10 points. . . . Freshman Lindsay Huffman (Maury) of Randolph-Macon scored a goal and an assist in the Lady Yellow Jackets' 12-0 victory over Sweet Briar College.
