The Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority (PRHA) will receive $476,500 to fight drugs in local public housing developments, Congressman Norman Sisisky has announced. The grant will fund additional police service and prevention programs.
PRHA has proposed a comprehensive approach to cut drug-related crime. Six police substations will serve public housing developments, and the Portsmouth Police Department has agreed to provide 16 additional hours of police service each week. Proposed prevention programs include a tutorial program, a conflict mediation program, a Citizens Police Academy and educational instruction to prepare young people to pass literacy tests.
The grant is part of the fiscal year 1994 Public and Indian Housing Drug Elimination Program.
