CROP WALK

The Portsmouth-Chesapeake Area CROP Walk for the Hungry will start at 2 p.m. Oct. 16 at Portside, with registration beginning at 1 p.m.

The walk is a hunger awareness event of Church World Service, which provides disaster relief in the United States and coordinates self-development programs overseas in cooperation with other hunger agencies.

Sponsored annually by the Portsmouth Area Resources Coalition (PARC), this year's walk is coordinated by the Churchland Interfaith Council.

One-fourth of the receipts from each walk is returned to the community. As the local sponsor, PARC will receive the funds and purchase food for homeless families residing at PARC Place Shelter.

The 10-kilometer route includes Crawford Bay, Hospital Point, Olde Towne and the Seawall. Prior to the walk, volunteers need to secure sponsors who will pledge a certain amount of money per kilometer, therefore pre-registration is required. The necessary materials can be obtained by calling 393-7848 during the day or 484-9623 in the evening. by CNB
