SANDUNERS GRAB LEAD IN NAGS HEAD TOURNAMENT

The Sanduners International Fishing Team from Kill Devil Hills pulled 49 fish through the breakers of the North Carolina Outer Banks Thursday to take the opening-day lead in the 44th annual Nags Head Surf Fishing Tournament.

The team scored 138 points, with fish scored by length. Most catches were small bluefish, although some speckled trout also were included.

The 78 six-person teams beached 952 fish and scored 2,957 points. The largest fish of the day was a 19-inch trout beached by Rick Tupper of the Stiff Rods fishing team from Nags Head. It scored nine points.

The Sanduners team includes John A. Watkins, Steve Benson, Phil Kanis, Andy McCann, George McLean and Wally Smith.

The Gulf Stream Fishing Team from Nags Head is second with 43 fish and 118 points. Team members are Louis Koetzer, Norm Bradford, Tom Burke, Jack Harrington, Curtis MIller and Ted Frizzell.

The defending champions, the Merchantville Fishing Club of Berlin, N.J., are third with 40 fish and 112 points. The team includes Charlie Trost, Bob Kessel, Bob Caymann, Charlie Merkh, Mike Flint and Charlie Doerr.

The North Carolina Sea Hags are the top female team with 14 fish and 45 points, good for 24th place overall. The team features Glenda Gaskill, Helen Hoppe, Jane Wirth, Etta Parrott, Edith Sheetz and Pat Moor.

Team competition continues today, with an individual session, open to anyone, set for Saturday morning. The contest is sponsored by the Nags Head Surf Fishing Club.
