A shotgun blast or a shot from a large-caliber gun missed a Smithfield police officer and his car early Friday when he was on routine patrol.
Officer Scott Holt was pulling out of the Jersey Park Apartments about 12:15 a.m. Friday when he heard a shot and then the sound of something whizzing by his patrol car, said Smithfield Police Chief M.A. Marshall.
Marshall said another officer, who was following Holt at the time, also heard the shot.
Five officers were called to the scene, but no arrest was made, Marshall said.
``It was difficult to even tell what direction the shot came from,'' he said. ``And it was either a shotgun blast or a shot from a large-caliber gun because the sound wasn't just a pop, it was a boom.''
He said recent calls to the apartment complex have been for domestic problems, fights and public drunkenness.
He said there will be an increase in evening patrols there.
Bullet-proof vests are mandatory for all Smithfield officers.
