Ollie North, the darling of the religious right, is a paradox. How could such a person who has flouted the law and incurred the scorn of Reagan, Warner and his previous commanders be chosen to represent the Virginia Republican Party in the U.S. Senate race? How can North, convicted of lying to Con-gress (yet let off the hook on a technicality), get the support of Evangelical Christians, whose name for a liar is ``Lucifer''?
I am relieved that Sen. Warner has broken ranks to support, with many others, the independent campaign of Marshall Coleman. Mr. Coleman will give the moderate, normally Republican voter, who doesn't care for the lies of Ollie North or the domination of the Republican Party by Robertsonites and Fallwellites, a voice.
I support Sen. Chuck Robb, who has been an effective senator and whose support of the Clinton administration is a plus. Compared to the indifference of Bush, the ``misery index'' of the economy is much less. Strides are being taken to reverse the ``Reagan legacy'' of exponential deficits. The economy is looking up.
Look at the peace and democracy flourishing throughout the world. What's so bad about never having to suffer without proper health care, no matter what your employment status is? What is so bad about giving youths without families an opportunity to participate in activities other than street crime? What's so bad about outlawing high-powered assault weapons that enable criminals to outgun the police?
Now is the time to support the good that is happening in this country and to give those religious evildoers such a devastating defeat at the polls that they will be forced to search their hearts and pray for guidance to change their ways.
