GLORIA C. SOUTHALL

Gloria Clark Southall, one of God's angels working on earth, was called home on Friday, October 7, 1994, in the Portsmouth Naval Hospital after a long period of illness.

Gloria was born in Portsmouth. She graduated as an honor student from I.C. Norcom, Class of `58, and attended Business College in Washington, D.C., before becoming a full-time employee with the Portsmouth Public School System as an Office Clerk/Secretary. She completed her formal education by earning a B.S. degree in Business from Hampton University. She resigned her position at Hampton University as a collections agent to begin substitute teaching on a regular basis at Kecoughtan High, Hampton High, and Bethel High Schools, receiving the highest praise. She was to receive a regular teaching position in the Hampton School System when her illness would no longer allow her to work.

She was a proud housewife, mother, educator and witness for Christ. Her works will speak for her throughout eternity. Her heart was filled with charity for everyone. She always reached out her hand to the needy. When she opened her mouth there was wisdom, and on her tongue was the law of kindness towards everyone because of her love for Jesus. Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but Gloria had both, yet she was wise enough to fear the Lord. For that she is praised by all.

While in the vineyard at Third Baptist Church, she served as a Sunday School teacher, secretary of the Deaconess Board, member of the Women's Guild, secretary of the C.H. Jordan Crusader's Club, and chaperon/advisor for the Children's Ministry. As a youth, she served as a leader of the Baptist Youth Training Union.

While traveling overseas, she was a member of the Gospel Choir, a Sunday School teacher and a Sunday School Superintendent. Gloria conducted a Children's Bible ministry in her home. ``Let the work I've done speak for me.''

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Gilbert L. Southall; a son, Michael F. Southall of Hampton; a daughter, April L. Southall, Spc. 4 U.S. Army, Fort Eustis, Newport News; her mother, Louise Clark of Portsmouth; and aunt, Lorraine Riddick of Portsmouth; an uncle, Norwood Copeland of Norfolk; a grandmother, Elner C. Monroe of Portsmouth; two sisters, Patricia Ann Bailey of Surry, and Beverly Worrell of Portsmouth; one brother, William Clark of Portsmouth; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

The funeral will be conducted at noon Tuesday by the Rev. Joe B. Fleming in Third Baptist Church. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Chesapeake. Viewing will be at Corprew Funeral Home at noon today. Family and friends will be at 1205 Warfield Drive, Portsmouth. The body will be taken to the church at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
