Nauticus began its limited fall hours last month, but the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, tucked inside the maritime attraction, is still open seven days a week.
The National Maritime Center is now open four days a week, Thursday through Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. On those days, the naval museum has the same hours. But it's also open - free of charge - Monday through Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
``It's government-sponsored,'' said Corky Haisten, marketing director for Nauticus. ``Since it's tax dollars at work, it's free to the public.''
The four-day schedule began after Labor Day and lasts until Dec. 22, when Nauticus will be open every day except Christmas through the end of the month
Originally, plans called for Nauticus to close in January and February so workers can set up new exhibits.
But those plans are not etched in stone, Haisten said.
``We may need a full 90 days to make the changes,'' he said.
The attraction is trying to lure locals by offering discounts. If Hampton Roads residents visit once and pay the full price of $10 for adults, they can get a pass good for one year.
The pass is good for free admission when the resident is accompanied by someone who pays full price, or, if the resident visits alone, half-price admission .
For October only, the pass also is good for 40 percent off restaurant and gift shop purchases and free admission to two attractions inside, Virtual Adventures and the Aegis Theater.
Those attractions normally cost $2.50 each. by CNB
