What's it worth to taxpayers to save City Council members the grueling elevator ride from the fourth to the first floor of City Hall?
The councilmen decided Tuesday it's worth $56,700.
The money will be used to install television equipment in a training room three stories above the opulent chamber where they hold their regular sessions so that council work sessions can be televised from there.
They could have moved their work sessions downstairs, where the taxpayers already provide television equipment. But they consider the vaulted ceilings, the plush carpet and the polished hardwood dais of Council Chambers too cold and impersonal for informal sessions. They are more comfortable sitting face-to-face across a table.
Most of the people who will be paying for the new equipment don't make $56,700 a year. For them, one TV system at City Hall must seem like plenty. by CNB
