Mr. John Thomas Long Sr., age 82, of 2582 Peartree Road, Elizabeth City, died Monday, Oct. 17 in Albemarle Hospital. He was a native of Pasquotank County and was retired from the Civil Service as a boat builder for the U.S.C.G. in Portsmouth. He was a past deacon of the Olivet Baptist Church and attended Symons Creek Tabernacle. He was the son of the late Richard F. and Margaret Ranhorn Long and the husband of Dorcas Willis Austin Long of the home.
Besides his wife, Mr. Long is survived by one son, John T. Long Jr. of Elizabeth City; four sisters, Maude B. Creef and Iona Russell, both of Woodville, N.C., and Martha Gaskins and Minnie Jacobs, both of Elizabeth City; one brother, Wallace Long of South Norfolk; one granddaughter, Karen Szczepanski of Moyock, N.C., and one great-granddaughter, Kaitlynn Marie Szczepanski of Moyock, N.C. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Sarah Marie Frue Long.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Twiford Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, N.C. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 7 until 8:30 p.m. and at other times at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John T. Long, 1357 B Salem Church Road, Elizabeth City.
