JAMES R. BROOKS SR.

James R. Brooks Sr., 91, of the 400 block of South Centerville Turnpike, died Tuesday in Chesapeake General Hospital.

Mr. Brooks was born in Grenada, Miss., and was the son of the late James Issac and Zora Ellen Morehead Brooks, and husband of Mabel Johnson Brooks of Chesapeake. He was a retired Chief Warrant Officer 2 serving in the United States Navy for 20 years. After his retirement he became a Civil Service sheet metal mechanic at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard for 16 years. He was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church, Retired Officers Association and the Fleet Reserve Association.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Marjorie Ellen Brooks Heinz of Wilmington, N.C., and Deborah Fontella Brooks Devine of Chesapeake; two sons, James Rufus Brooks Jr. of Chesapeake, CW03 Charles Delaney Brooks, U.S.A., Smithfield, Va.; one brother, Jack Brooks of Southaven, Miss.; two sisters, Frances Brooks Forbes and Fontella Brooks Goza, both of Grenada, Miss.; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday at 2 p.m in the chapel of the Oman Funeral Home by the Rev. W. Roberts McIvor. Burial in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. today.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Sanctuary Refurbishing Fund of Oak Grove United Methodist Church.
