Lt. Cmdr. Joseph Lawrence Byrne, U.S.N. (Ret.), 71, of the 200 block of East 39th St., died Oct. 19, 1994, in a local hospital.
Commander Byrne was a native of New York City and was Roman Catholic. He served in World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a graduate of the Naval War College of Newport, R.I., and received many awards and medals during his military career of 30 years. After retirement from the Navy, he went on to receive his Master of International Water Captain's License, and was a seagoing captain for 17 years. Upon retirement, he was a part-time captain for the Jamestown Scottland Ferry.
Commander Byrne was a past president of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Norfolk Chapter, a member of the Retired Officers Association, Seafarers International Union, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Fleet Reserve, and a volunteer for the American Red Cross.
Survivors include his wife, Iris Lillian Byrne; two daughters, Patricia Anne Byrne, Kathleen Byrne Miles and her husband, Carroll L. Miles, all of Chesapeake; three sons, Charles A. Blair and his wife, Peggy D. Blair, of Norfolk, Richard S. Blair and his wife, Elizabeth T. Blair, of Tampa, Fla., and Michael Joseph Byrne of Richmond; and seven grandchildren, Jacqueline R. Blair, Anthony P. Lyons, Charles A. Blair Jr., Mark C. Miles, Kelley A. Miles, Kathleen W. Miles and Ashley Michelle Burse.
A chapel service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, by the Rev. Edward R. Richardson. Burial will be private in Arlington National Cemetery.
