COMMUNITY BRIEFS

MANTEO

DEPUTIES HONORED: Six members of the Dare County Sheriff's Department have been awarded intermediate law enforcement certificates from the North Carolina Sheriffs' Education and Training Standards Commission.

The deputies cited by the commission were Thaddeous Arnell Pledger, Eric Barnes, William Anthony Duvall, Norman Lee Johnson, Gene Roberts Johnson and Rollins Davis Tillett Jr.

Dare County Chief Deputy Rodney Midgett said the courses offered by the commission are designed to improve job performance.

``We are pleased that so many of our officers are willing to participate in these important programs,'' Midgett said. ``The certificates are a good way to recognize these people for their dedicated efforts on behalf of the county.''

CHARGED IN CRACK CASE: The Dare County Sheriff's Department said Friday it has arrested 23-year-old Milton Douglas Banks of Manteo and charged him with possession of crack cocaine with the intent to sell or deliver and with the sale and delivery of the drug.

A spokesman said Banks was arrested after allegedly selling crack to an undercover officer. The arrest was the result of a two-month investigation.

RALEIGH

BRIDGE HELPER HONORED: Paula Brown, a northeastern claims specialist with the North Carolina Employment Security Commission, has won the 1994 Employment Security Commission Award.

Brown was cited for her role in helping Hatteras and Ocracoke Island workers file for unemployment benefits following the Bonner Bridge collapse, and for spending personal time to track down and correct systems problems that delayed benefit checks under the Emergency Unemployment Compensation Program.

``Paula is truly someone her co-workers can look up to,'' says ESC Chairman Ann Duncan. ``Her devotion and dedication have resulted in top quality service for our customers in Eastern North Carolina.'' by CNB
