`ROBB HAS WORKED HARD FOR VIRGINIA'

I was born, raised and educated in the South and have been a Virginia resident for almost 40 years. I am a veteran of the armed services and saw action in the Pacific during World War II. I am a political independent, having, at various times, voted for Republican, Democrat and independent candidates. And I am a Christian, an ordained minister of the gospel for more than 45 years.

I shall take all of those credentials to the polls next month and vote for Sen. Chuck Robb, who is the only viable alternative to the felonious and frightfully unqualified Oliver North.

It is appalling to me that in the home state of Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and George Washington, a political party has stooped to anoint ``odious Ollie'' as a candidate for the U.S. Senate. North is the antithesis of everything these good men stood for.

I will vote to send a good, capable, flawed man back to the Senate. Robb is not perfect, but he honestly admitted his errors in judgment. He has worked hard for Virginia. He will continue to do so.

A number of articles about the Robb/ North Senate race refer to Oliver North ``handlers'' and ``advisors.'' I see this as implying that North is not his own man. I feel this is true of his campaign.

I believe in most of the Republican Party platform, but putting forth a candidate with more charisma than integrity is not a credible way to advance a supposed agenda of morality and values.

Our best choice may be the lesser of two evils. If the Republicans had advanced an individually capable candidate not needing so much ``handling,'' this race would not have been a close contest.

I choose Chuck Robb, because I believe him to be the more credible and effective candidate.

Even those who dislike all candidates should vote. Not voting means you never make that ``right'' choice.

I note that Oliver North is now unleashing his heavy artillery at Chuck Robb's past.

I'll gladly take Robb's past indiscretions over North's, which include selling arms secretly to Iran, a sworn enemy of the United States.

North then illegally diverted funds from those sales to ``freedom fighters,'' who reportedly used portions of those funds to purchase drugs and sold them in this country.

I urge Virginians to ask themselves: ``Is North following Virginia's agenda or his own?'' The answer should be clear.

I usually look forward to October, when many of my neighbors go to delightful excess to decorate their yards for Halloween. This year, however, I've seen a new ornament, with words more terrifying than a Stephen King novel, in front of some homes: ``North for U.S. Senate.''

If angry voters want to send ``a message to Clinton,'' send it to the president, not Oliver North. If Virginians elect North, who cares little for Virginia, we get the complete package of denizens of the right-wing fringe.

Let's re-elect Chuck Robb. He's done a good job for Virginia, and skeletons in his closet weren't put there by U.S.-supplied Iranian weapons.
