CHAPPELL WINS HANDICAP TOURNEY

Taylor Chappell not only was closest to the pin on No. 6, but captured the annual Suffolk Golf Association's handicap tournament with a 63 last Sunday.

Charles Holloman placed second with a 64 and Jamie Simpson took third with a 65. Mike Bigony and Michael Simpkins were tied with 66, but Bigony finished fourth on matched cards.

Shooting 67 were Ben Chaney, Norman Wilkins, Cecil Gautier, Dan Holly and Helmick Benton. Wayne Byrum fired a 68.

Coming in at 69 were Bobby Draper, Jimmy Manlove, Troy Carr, Joe Battaglia, Joe Collins, Ben Brothers and Bill Callis. Scoring a 70 were Bob Young, George Dakos, Wayne Roberts, Billy E. Russell and Rusty Ellis.

David Read and Pete Bowman both had 71 while David Joyner and J.T. Magee shot 72. David Slack came in with a 73.

Other scores were Glen Hughes and Daren Perry, 74; Kelly Simpson and Cliff Gaskins, 75; Richard Tayloe, 76; Leland Turner and Herbert Faison, 77, and David Dougherty, 87.

Other closest to the pin winners were Hughes, No. 9; Dakos, No. 14, and Simpson, No. 16.

The SGA's next tournament will be a Turkey Blitz scheduled for Nov. 20. A member-guest tourney is set for Dec. 7.

HEADS FOR NATIONALS: Michelle Grover, who is only 12, has qualified for the United States Tennis Association's national indoor championships for girls 14 and under. The two-time state champion will play at St. Louis, Mo., during the Thanksgiving break.

Grover was one of five girls selected from the Mid Atlantic Region, which includes Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia and Washington. She will be competing against 127 other girls from all over the nation.

An eighth-grader at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, she is also playing basketball for the Saints' junior JV team for seventh- and eighth-graders.

WINS PISTOL MATCH: Butch Achterhoff of Suffolk fired a 1715 and was declared the match winner at the indoor pistol match at the Norfolk County range last weekend.

Don Cooke of Virginia Beach shot a 1691 out of 1800 and was named first expert and Doug Harris of Chesapeake had a 1645 for second expert. Rick Lain of Norfolk took first marksman with a 1494.

BUILDER REPORT: Michael Drier, a Lakeland High graduate, and Tony Saunders, out of Surry County, continue to terrorize Apprentice School opponents this season.

Drier has 17 tackles, 10 unassisted, and Saunders has 16, including 12 solos. by CNB
