SISISKY BACKS MILITARY, BUSINESS

In all the hoopla of the Virginia senatorial race, the contest for the 4th Congressional District seat has been largely ignored. Voters would do well to remember the contributions and clout of Rep. Norman Sisisky come Election Day.

I am part owner of a small business largely dependent on defense contracts, so I am keenly aware of the efforts of our congressional representatives in support of the military presence in Hampton Roads, as well as of small business in general. Congressman Sisisky stands head and shoulders above the rest of the Virginia delegation in that regard.

As a ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee, he has worked tirelessly to promote Hampton Roads as the best location for military facilities and commands. I have no doubt he will continue his strong efforts during the 1995 Base Realignment and Closure process. Because of his seniority, Congressman Sisisky, if re-elected, will serve as chairman of the Readiness Subcommittee, with responsibility for Operations and Maintenance Funding under the House Armed Services Committee. This subcommittee establishes the budget for the day-to-day operation of all our armed services, much of which money is spent right here in Hampton Roads. Should he not be re-elected, this important position will be lost to us.

Based on his record, Congressman Sisisky deserves to be returned to Congress. Based on his seniority and strong advocacy of the area, Hampton Roads needs him in Congress. Although I have been a staunch Republican in the past, I certainly intend to vote for Mr. Sisisky.
