REV. J. WILLIAM HOUGH

The Rev. James William ``Bill'' Hough, 80, of 2716 Saratoga Drive, died Thursday in his residence.

The Rev. Hough was born Jan. 26, 1914 in Norfolk, Va. the son of the late Samuel Nelson and Rosalie Howell Hough. He was a minister for Braddock Street United Methodist Church, where he retired in June 1982 after serving since 1977. He was an ordained deacon and admitted to the Virginia Conference United Methodist Church in 1947. He was ordained as an elder in the Virginia Annual Conference in 1949. He served at the following churches as minister: Walker Chapel & Chesterbrook, Arlington & Fairfax County 1947-48, Walker Chapel, Arlington, 1948-55, Fairfax, City of Fairfax 1955-60, Fairlington, Alexandria, Va., 1960-62, Fredericksburg, Fredericksburg, Va., 1962-67, Trinity, Newport News, Va., 1967-68, Bon Air, Richmond, Va., 1968-71, Arlington Forest, Arlington, Va., 1971-77.

Rev. Hough was a 1932 graduate of Maury High School, Norfolk, Va., a 1942 graduate of Randolph Macon College, Ashland, Va., where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree and a 1947 graduate of Candler School of Theology, Emory University, Atlanta, Ga., where he received a Bachelor of Divinity degree. He received an Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree from Shenandoah University in 1984. He was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Reserves (1942-45) during WWII serving in the continental United States and Panama and on the USS Isherwood and the USS Ault.

Rev. Hough was a member of the Braddock Street United Methodist Church, the Virginia Conference Council on Ministries, 1972-75, and the Phi Beta Kappa & Omicron Delta Kappa Honorary Fraternities. He was past president of the Board of Social and Economic Relations, 1959-60, and the Commission on Religion and Race, 1972-75. Rev. Hough served on the Board of Directors of the Coalition for Racial Unity in Winchester. He received the First Campus Citizen Award from Randolph Macon College. He achieved a hole in one on the 9th Hole, Washington Golf and Country Club, Nov. 29, 1975, and on the 16th Hole, Carpers Valley Golf Club, Aug. 2, 1985.

He married Pauline McFall Hough through Nov. 14, 1936, in Norfolk, Va. Mrs. Hough preceded him in death on April 11, 1994.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Kurt (Patsy Jean) Stein of Lake Park, Fla., and Mrs. J. Ralph (Linda Lee) Fallin of Montross, Va.; four grandchildren, Victoria Bruley of Ashburn, Va., Michael Stapleton of Jacksonville, Fla., Michelle Fallin and Karen Renee Fallin, both of Montross, Va.; two sisters, Elizabeth Riggin of Portland, Ore., and Frances Miller of Virginia Beach; one sister, Mary H. Clarke; and one brother, Herbert N. Hough, preceded him in death.

A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Braddock Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Peters officiating. Interment will be private. The family will provide altar flowers for the church where the memorial service will be held. Memorial gifts to the Relief Fund of the Braddock Street United Methodist Church are encouraged.
