CHUCK ROBB IS A SAFER BET

Any doubt of Oliver North's dark side should have been erased by his recent attack on our president.

In a mean-spirited attempt to discredit Sen. Chuck Robb for his loyalty, North called the president ``a flip-floppin' yahoo from Arkansas,'' insinuated that President Clinton was a ``bone-headed liberal'' and delighted that the president is ``not my commander in chief.'' This was blatant disrespect for the nation's highest office by a man who once served as a ranking Marine officer.

Such conduct is inconsistent with Mr. North's ravings about character and family values. The huge military institution in our area, in particular, should be outraged.

Still, Mr. North has raised substantial campaign funds, due primarily to the public's malcontent with Congress and to Mr. North's dubious claim that he will advance Virginia by detaching himself from that body.

Mr. Robb admittedly has acquired some baggage, as do many politicians, yet he is a much safer bet. He is a moderate whose record as a Virginia governor and senator has not been disappointing, and he has far too much class and good sense to vilify a sitting president.
