7 SHERIFFS EXPECTED TO ATTEND TODAY'S LUNCHEON FOR JUDGE JAMES C. COLE

Sheriffs from all counties in the 1st Judicial District are expected today at an ``endorsement luncheon'' for District Court Judge James Carlton Cole, who is running for election on Nov. 8.

The lunch will be held at 12:30 p.m. in the Holiday Inn.

``All seven sheriffs are expected to attend the Holiday Inn meeting,'' said a clerk in the District Court office on Tuesday. The 1st Judicial District covers seven counties.

Cole was named to the District Court bench by Gov. James B. Hunt Jr., after Cole's wife resigned from the judgeship earlier this year following her appointment as U.S. prosecutor for the Eastern District of North Carolina.

Cole stepped down as chairman of the 1st Congressional District Democratic Party earlier this year to run for the District Court judgeship. A few weeks later, Hunt named him to serve out his wife's term on the District Court.

Cole is opposed by James A. Beales Jr., an Elizabeth City attorney who won the Republican nomination for the District Court vacancy.

Cole formerly practiced law in Hertford in Perquimans County. by CNB
