Winter teased Hampton Roads on Wednesday as a cold front rumbled through, turning an already chilly afternoon wet, gray and colder still.
Temperatures dropped from a high of 61 degrees to 52 by 4 p.m. and were expected to dip into the 40s overnight inland with 50s near the coast. And anyone unfortunate enough to be caught outside in the rain found that it felt like being hit with a glass of icewater.
By sunset, breezy conditions made it feel as if it was 39 degrees. In a region where winter is characterized by temperatures in the mid-30s to mid-40s and rain, it was easy to imagine that October had turned to December.
It was a dramatic change from a day earlier, when temperatures hit a summerlike 75.
By 7 p.m., temperatures across the state had dropped to wintry levels. Hot Springs was not living up to its name as the mercury fell to 29, and winds, gusting to 20 to 25 mph, made it feel like 8 degrees.
Temperatures were expected to dip into the 30s across a large portion of the state overnight, with lows ranging from the 20s in the northern mountains to the 50s on the North Carolina Outer Banks and in Virginia Beach.
Frost and freeze warnings were up for the mountains and foothills of western Virginia and North Carolina.
The forecast for Hampton Roads and vicinity:
Today - Sunny. High near 60. North winds 10 to 15 mph.
Tonight - Clear and cool. Low in the lower to mid-40s. Light winds.
Friday - Sunny and warmer. High in the mid-60s. by CNB
