After watching his plan for a Walt Disney Co. theme park fall through, Gov. George Allen is now preparing to lure major league baseball to Northern Virginia.
Administration officials said Thursday that if an expansion club is approved for the Washington suburbs, the state is prepared to create a Virginia Baseball Stadium Authority that could issue tax-exempt bonds to pay for a stadium, parking, transportation and other improvements.
Two competing Northern Virginia groups have been invited along with groups from Phoenix, Orlando, Fla., and Tampa-St. Petersburg to make presentations to the league's expansion committee Tuesday in Chicago. Allen may fly to Chicago next week to personally pitch the plan to the league's expansion committee, an aide said.
State officials have refused to identify the five sites being considered for a possible stadium. But sources told The Washington Post that three are in Fairfax County and two are in Loudoun County. by CNB
