Since the Base Realignment and Closure Commission required the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC), Detachment Norfolk, to relocate to Newport, R.I., several hundred employees have been forced to find employment elsewhere or retire.
I was disappointed recently with a George Sweet campaign advertisement accusing Congressman Norman Sisisky of not attempting to resist base closure.
Congressman Sisisky had always proved to be a staunch defender of civil-service employees and has been accessible to NUWC personnel and others in his district adversely affected by the BRAC Commission. I feel he has consistently supported NUWC even when it was not politically prudent or popular for him to do so. Norman Sisisky and the NUWC employees have shared some triumphs and disappointments, but, like others, I personally appreciate him for being there for us when we needed him.
George Sweet has apparently been misinformed. Rightly or wrongly, decision-making by the BRAC Commission is an arduous, frequently political, collective process. No decision is made exclusively as the result of one individual's or politician's action or inaction.
Norman Sisisky has been a steadfast and solitary beacon of hope in an otherwise tumultuous sea of despair.
