Bert Donald Sutherland, 85, of Sir Wilfred Circle died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 1994.
He was born in Toronto, Canada. The Rev. Sutherland was a minister of the gospel who served as pastor in Michigan, New Jersey, and for 17 years in Wissinoming Baptist Church, Philadelphia. He graduated from Philadelphia College of Bible, where he later taught for 15 years.
Following his pastorate, he was associate treasurer and then treasurer of the Association of Baptists for World Evangelism for 10 years. After his retirement, he was very active in a teaching ministry of Sunday School and evening classes at Prince Avenue Baptist Church, Athens, Ga., and at Virginia Beach Community Chapel. He had one purpose in life - to make Christ known.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Loney Sutherland; and their only child, Aileen Jane Collins; son-in-law, Samuel L. Collins grandchildren, Kimberly Anne Collins and Kevin Scott Collins, his wife, Shannan and a great-granddaughter, Alyssa Jean.
Services will be held Saturday, Nov. 5, at 1:30 p.m. in the Virginia Beach Community Chapel. Rev. Thorton M. Frye will be officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service at Princess Anne Memorial Park. The family will receive friends this evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Kellum Funeral Home, Bonney Road Chapel.
