The Nags Head Surf Fishing Club caught 18 fish and scored 60 points Thursday to take the opening day lead in the 37th annual Cape Hatteras Invitational surf fishing tournament.
The team includes Warren Koehl, Ted Albon, Verdon Dolery, Kearns Loman, Dave Masters and Gil Rigo.
The Merchantville Fishing Club of Berlin, N.J. is second with 19 scoring fish and 53 points, while the Fish Hawks of Kill Devil Hills are third with 18 catches and 53 points.
The Merchantville team features Marvin Thorn, Mike Flint, Charles Merkh, Charles Trost, Carl Astorino and Art Astorino.
The Fish Hawks are represented by Kevin Piddington, Craig Fearing, Sony Busky, Paul Busky, Larry Rust and Dave Davenport.
The Sand Bunnies of Nags Head are the leading female team with six catches and 24 points, good for 24th overall in the 100-team field. The team includes Julie Gard, Noelle Payne, Bobbi McCarty, Becky Masters, Nancy Sebrell and Zanda Schmoyer.
The teams caught 515 fish and scored 1,505 points Thursday, with the scoring length. Team competition continues today, with an individual session open to anyone Saturday morning.
