``HE'S ALIVE!'' Well, hopefully. Robert De Niro is the Creature in ``Mary Shelley's Frankenstein,'' the latest incarnation of the classic horror yarn. Pledging allegiance to the original novel, it's directed by Kenneth Branagh, who also plays Frankenstein, a guy who messes with Mother Nature - and pays for it. Helena Bonham Carter (``Howard's End'') brings her alabaster look to the role of his beloved. Branagh has a knack for shaking up Shakespeare, but can he bring this one off? Will De Niro come off like Taxi Creature? ``You creatin' me? Hey, you creatin' me?'' The possibilities are endless.

TUESDAY POP QUIZ: Who can name a mega-hyped movie from MCA/Universal that has dinosaurs in it? ``Jurassic Park'' doesn't count. Sure, ``The Flintstones.'' Critics weren't floored by the movie (one called it yabba-dabba-doo-doo) but it's harmless enough. Besides, John Goodman nails Fred, the sets are pretty cool and it sold a lot of Happy Meals. Is that enough for you to go out and buy the video? Your call. It's being released Tuesday.

TONIGHT
TONIGHT AT 8 at the Generic Theater in Norfolk, catch the world premiere of a new play by an Academy Award-winning writer. No kidding.
Ernest Thompson, author of ``On Golden Pond,'' has given the first production of his recent play, ``Amazons in August,'' to the low-budget, experimentally-inclined playhouse. The comedy-drama centers on a friendship between an out-of-work New York actress and an Illinois woman in Manhattan for breast-cancer treatment.
Shows continue through Nov. 27, at 912 W. 21st St. Tickets are $7 to $10. Call 441-2160.

MONDAY
Pianist John Toomy, ODU professor and veteran of numerous bands, including Maynard Ferguson's, leads a quintet in a recital of local jazz composers' work Monday at the university's Chandler Recital Hall. Other players include bassist Jimmy Masters, sax player Eddie Williams, drummer Howard Curtis and percussionist Larry Emanuel. Each will contribute material to the free concert, as will Fred Hibbard, Rob Holmes and Pete Cosmos. Watch for a profile of Toomey, whose resume also includes a stint at a music camp in Botswana, in Sunday's Daily Break.
