The chairman of the state Democratic party charged Friday that half of the position points attributed to incumbent U.S. Sen. Charles S. Robb on a voters guide being distributed by the Christian Coalition are ``out-and-out lies.''
The Chesapeake-based coalition is distributing thousands of the guides to churches statewide as part of a larger, nationwide effort.
Democrat Mark Warner took issue with five of the 10 points attributed to Robb:
Opposes ``parental choice in school'' - Warner said that while Robb opposes tax credits for private schools, the senator believes parents should be free to choose between public, private or home schooling.
Opposes ``voluntary prayer in public schools'' - Warner said Robb supports it.
Supports ``taxpayer funding of obscene art'' - Warner said Robb supported an amendment sponsored by North Carolina Republican Sen. Jesse Helms to limit such funding.
Supports ``banning ownership of legal firearms'' - Warner said that while Robb supported bans on 19 specific assault weapons, Robb supports ownership of ``legal firearms.''
Supports ``federal government control of health care'' - Warner said that Robb took no position and never cast a vote on President Clinton's health care proposal or any other variation.
