Levin Francell Custis Jr., of the 100 block of South Fourth St., a retired contractor, died Nov. 6, 1994, in his residence.
Mr. Custis was born in Nassawadox, Va. He was the widow of Nan Buck Custis and was a member and trustee of East End Baptist Church. He was the first black School Board member in the city of Suffolk and was a developer and builder of commercial and residential properties from Spartanburg, S.C. to Cherry Hill, N.J. and Nassawadox, Va. (located on the Eastern Shore). He was a member of Epsilon Iota Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Norfolk Chapter of the Guardsman Inc., the first male graduate of St. Paul's University's four year curriculum, vice president of the Historical Society of Suffolk and was selected Man of the Year W.A.L.L.S., Inc. He was a former member of Sahib Club Inc.
Survivors include a daughter, Yvonne Custis-Downing of Hampton; a daughter-in-law, Debra R. Custis of Richmond; a son, Levin F. Custis III of Richmond; a foster son, Terry Elliott of Suffolk; two sisters, Jane C. Stevens of Philadelphia and Shirley C. Williams of Hampton; two brothers, Irving H. Custis of Philadelphia and Lawrence H. Custis of Baltimore; and grandchildren, Carmen M. Downing, Conway A. Downing III and Levin F. Custis IV.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in East End Baptist Church by the Rev. Mark Croston. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. Fisher Funeral Home is handling arrangements. The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, Yvonne Custis-Downing, 15 Red Leaf Place, Hampton, Va. 23666, today and Wednesday. The family will be at the residence on Thursday from 2 to 9 p.m. and will assemble there at 10 a.m. Friday for the processional.
