Minnie Gaylord Chapman, 83, of the 5600 block of Rycroft Court, died Sunday, Nov. 6, 1994, in Sentara Nursing Center, Bonney Road.
Mrs. Chapman was born in Pitt County, N.C. She was the daughter of Austin and Annie House Gaylord and was the widow of Charlie R. Chapman. She was a beautician for many years before retiring, and operated at the Neighborhood Beauty Parlor. Mrs. Chapman a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Chesapeake and was a longtime member of Mount Zion when the church was located on Princess Anne Road in Norfolk and then Armstrong St. During these years she was active in all phases of church life, including Deaconess Board, Missionary Circle, Senior Choir, Willing Workers and the Pastor's Aid Society. She was also a member of the Hunter Square Senior Citizens Group and United Order of Tents, Lydia Tent (NU)1.
Survivors include a son, William R. Beckwith of Virginia Beach; a sister, Jenny Gardner of Greenville, N.C.; three grandchildren, Carolyn Brown, Marjorie Burton and Benita Simmons; seven great-grandchildren; and a devoted daughter-in-law, Doris Beckwith.
A funeral service will be conducted at noon Friday in Mount Zion Baptist Church, 1608 E. Liberty St., Chesapeake, by the Rev. Rayphield Clay. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Viewing will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Riddick Funeral Service. The United Order of Tents memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday and at 5601 Rycroft Court in the Wesleyan Pines section of Virginia Beach.
