Two incumbents running for seats on the local Soil and Water Conservation District won Tuesday's election without significant opposition.
Parke Ashburn Jr. and Floyd R. Umphlett Jr. won their re-election bids in Suffolk. Ashburn received 7,740 votes, Umphlett 7,440. The Suffolk registrar reported several write-in votes but could not report an exact figure Tuesday night.
Umphlett's election adds three more years to his 28 years of service in the district. Both board members are local farmers.
The local district, known as the Peanut Soil and Water Conservation District, encompasses the city of Suffolk and the counties of Isle of Wight and Surry. Each locality elects two directors. The state Soil and Water Conservation Board appoints two more. All directors serve unpaid, three-year terms.
The board helps educate and inform residents about conservation practices for soil and water. The 45 state districts are self-governing units of the state government.
