Twenty students and a teacher from Western Branch Middle School were taken by ambulance to Portsmouth's Maryview Medical Center on Wednesday after a small amount of turpentine spilled in a shop class.
They were sent to the hospital as a precaution, said Western Branch Principal Craig Jones. A couple students complained of nausea and dizziness, but no one was injured. Five of the students returned to school later in the day.
The turpentine spilled in the classroom at 9:45 a.m., Jones said. The room was evacuated, and the Chesapeake hazardous materials team tested the air in that room and an adjoining class.
The air in both rooms was deemed safe, Jones said, although no more classes were held in the shop room Wednesday. Classes went on as usual next door.
