POQUOSON, N. RIVER WIN IN BAY RIVERS SEMIFINALS

Poquoson built a 17-point lead and held on for a victory, and Nansemond River needed a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter to win in the semifinals of the Bay Rivers District girls basketball tournament.

The Islanders edged Lakeland, 50-49, after a furious fourth-quarter surge by the Cavaliers, and Nansemond River beat Bruton, 48-42, by scoring six points on one possession.

Poquoson built a 37-20 lead in the third quarter before Lakeland went on a 10-1 run sparked by consecutive 3-pointers by Angela Jones and Cherri Phillips. A Jones basket trimmed the deficit to 48-47 with 45 seconds remaining. But Michelle Hirsch sank two free throws with 25 seconds left to go up 50-47.

Knight scored with 27 seconds remaining to cut the margin to 1. Lakeland then stole the ball with five seconds to go but turned it over as time expired.

``In the first half, we came out flat and weren't aggressive,'' said Lakeland coach Stephanie Odum. ``We came out aggressive in the second half and just waited too long to get things done.''

Poquoson scored the first four points of the games and, sparked by Hirsch's eight first-half points, seized a 29-15 lead.

Knight finished with 14 points and Jones 11 for Lakeland.

Leading 33-30 after three quarters, Nansemond River got a layup from Jannie Porter, who was fouled. Porter missed her free throw, but the Warriors got possession and Angie Gatling scored and was fouled. Bunny Williams then rebounded Gatling's miss and scored to put Nansemond River up 39-30.

``We played a very poor game,'' said Warriors coach Sandra McCray. ``We were not mentally tough. We'll get taken out very early if we continue to make mistakes like we did tonight.''

The Panthers and Warriors traded leads throughout the first half, with Nansemond River edging in front, 21-19, at the half.

Nansemond River committed 29 turnovers.

Gatling led the Warriors with 16 points and Porter added eight.

Bruton and Lakeland will meet in a consolation game Saturday at 6 p.m. at Smithfield High School. The final will follow at 8. by CNB
