Nearly 100 Filipino-American advocates from the San Francisco Bay Area and across the country will gather this weekend to launch a new national civil rights organization to combat anti-immigrant fervor they say has grown all too apparent after this week's election.
Representatives will meet to elect leaders and develop a plan to address a host of civil rights issues concerning the nation's 1.4 million Filipino-Americans, who say they have often felt invisible because of their Spanish surnames and their lack of political clout.
Although many Filipino-American organizations already exist nationally, advocates say what sets this one apart is its sole focus on civil rights.
Among the issues they plan to tackle are English-only rules in the workplace and the problem Filipino professionals face in attaining management positions because of a glass ceiling.
