Recently, a man was arrested in Washington, D.C., for firing 30 rounds of ammunition at the White House. He was obviously trying to kill the president of the United States. Just as obviously, he did not succeed, but the damage he caused to the Executive Mansion reverberated throughout the land.
In a similar way, the political enemies of President Clinton have also fired upon the White House. Daily doses of Clinton-hating can be found on the air waves via radio hosts such as Rush Limbaugh and (convicted Watergate felon) G. Gordon Liddy.
The Christian Coalition has also supplied weapons and ammunition to the shooting gallery. Like the constant dripping of a faucet, this stream of half-truths and misinformation can eventually lead to wholesale dislike of a man who is in reality one of the most educated presidents in our nation's history. Despite his flaws, he is a human being, performing his duties well as president. Being the president, he has earned our respect.
I did not like the policies or politics of presidents Reagan and Bush, but to spread lies about them, to undermine their authority as president, would have been un-American.
