The Hampton Roads Admirals lost their top defenseman Tuesday when Brian Goudie was called up by the Portland Pirates of the AHL.
Goudie, who set an Admirals record for penalty minutes last season with 308, left Norfolk on Tuesday and will be in uniform tonight when the Pirates host Adirondack.
Goudie is under contract to Portland and was one of the last players cut by the Pirates. It was expected he would be called back up.
``I'm happy for Brian,'' Admirals president Blake Cullen said. ``He's a very skilled hockey player who has made himself into a force on the ice. He has great skills and doesn't back down from anyone. I hope he does well in Portland. He deserves it.''
The loss of Goudie leaves the Admirals with only four defensemen - Jason MacIntyre, Ron Pascucci, Chris Phelps and Tony MacAulay. Cullen says coach John Brophy will sign another defenseman before the Admirals host the Charlotte Checkers on Friday at Scope.
``We need a fifth defenseman,'' Cullen said. ``John was on the phones today and will be back on the phones tomorrow.''
Cullen says the Admirals have 3,653 tickets remaining for Friday's game, not 2,300 as was reported Tuesday. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
