OUTRAGED AT CHOICE

Virginia Republican Party leaders, angrily seeking a scapegoat, accuse Sen. John Warner of causing the loss of the senatorial election to Democrat Chuck Robb.

Before rushing to lose more elections, the Virginia GOP should recognize that the loss was because it chose a character-flawed candidate with few, if any, qualifications for public office.

Almost any Republican of stature could have and should have won this seat. There is indeed outrage among Republican conservative voters, but not toward Senator Warner, who clearly demonstrated his courage and convictions. Our anger is directed toward party leaders who ignore their broad constituency and select candidates who profess to support the agenda of a well-organized and well-financed few.

The voters spoke clearly in this election. Opposition to Warner in the next will lead to party fratricide and the election of another Democratic or independent senator in Virginia.
