WESTERN BRANCH DOMINATES ALL-CITY

As both a wide receiver and a defensive back, Western Branch double threat Dre Bly attacks the ball from both sides of the line with a proficiency that has earned him Player of the Year honors in Chesapeake.

The All-Chesapeake team was selected by the five city high school football coaches. Bly was a unanimous choice as the best offensive player, and missed unanimous selection to the first team defense by one vote.

Western Branch, which led the Southeastern District in total offense by nearly 80 yards a game, makes up over half of the All-Chesapeake first team offense with eight of the 13 selections.

District champion Deep Creek leads all schools with 10 players - three on offense, five on defense, and both kickers. Indian River, which finished tied for second in the district with Norcom, landed four players on the teams. All but one, tight end Jeremy Bridges, were on defense.

Offensively, Bly led the district in touchdown catches with seven. He had 27 receptions for an area-best 593 yards, a 22.0 average per catch. Leiker led all Chesapeake players in receptions (30) and finished second to Bly in yards with 504. He caught four touchdown passes and had a 16.8 yards average per catch.

Bridges tallied eight catches for 134 yards and one touchdown at tight end.

At running back are a trio of juniors, led by Great Bridge's Corey Holley. Holley finished first among Chesapeake rushers and second in the district with 1,133 yards on 188 carries. He scored 14 touchdowns.

Deep Creek's Deon Dyer finished the regular season with 934 yards on 135 carries and scored 17 touchdowns.

Shyrone Stith of Western Branch tallied 896 yards on 104 carries and led the district in scoring with 18 touchdowns (17 rush, one pass). ILLUSTRATION: Western Branch's Dre Bly
