Joseph Jackson ``Joe'' Stokes, 79, died Nov. 25, 1994, in his residence.
Mr. Stokes, a native of Elizabeth City, N.C., was retired as Health Director for Dare County and from the Elizabeth City Water Department. He was the former owner and operator of the Saltaire Motel on the Outer Banks.
Mr. Stokes was a member of the First Baptist Church of Elizabeth City and the Elizabeth City Lions Club. He was a past master and a past secretary of the Manteo Masonic Lodge (NU)521, a member of the New Bern Scottish Rite Bodies and the New Bern Shrine. Mr. Stokes was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was the son of the late Edward and Elsie Jackson Stokes.
Mr. Stokes is survived by his wife, Lucille Sawyer Stokes of the home; two daughters, Susann S. Wright of Kill Devil Hills, N.C., and Deborah E. Stokes of Elizabeth City, N.C.; one son, Captain Sam Stokes of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; one brother, Selby E. Stokes of Raleigh, N.C.; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services with Masonic Rites will be held at Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo, on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. by the Rev. Brad Bradshaw. Burial will be in Westlawn Cemetery in Elizabeth City at 4 p.m.
Twiford Colony Chapel, Manteo, is in charge of arrangements.
