2 NORFOLK TEENS ARRESTED, CAR RECOVERED

A police chase Monday ended with the arrest of two teenagers and the recovery of a car they allegedly stole.

During the chase, a police officer had to shoot a dog that came after him while he ran after one of the suspects.

Police later discovered items inside the car that had been taken during a burglary.

The chase began at 4:10 p.m. when officers M.M. Felix and T.M. Rumley of the 2nd Patrol Division spotted a red, 1988 Oldsmobile that had been reported stolen about 11 a.m. from the 7000 block of Granby St.

Police spokesman Larry Hill said the officers tried to pull the car over but the driver took off. Police pursued the car into the DelMar Trailer Park in the 8100 block of Ransom Road, just off Shore Drive.

When the car reached the neighborhood, three people jumped out and ran. The two officers gave chase.

Meanwhile, a resident of one trailer noticed the commotion outside and opened his door to take a look. When he did, his pet Rottweiler slipped outside just as Rumley ran by.

The dog charged at Rumley, despite repeated calls by its owner to stop.

Just before the dog got to him, Rumley fired his weapon and the bullet hit the dog in its chest. The dog was taken to a veterinarian for surgery and is expected to recover, Hill said.

Despite having to contend with the dog, the officers caught two of the three suspects.

Hill identified them as a 16-year-old from 29th Bay Street and a 15-year-old from Llewellyn Avenue.

When police searched the car, they found items stolen earlier in the day from a home in the 9500 block of 28th Bay St.

The teenagers, whose names were not released because of their ages, were charged with burglary and car theft.
