William J. Schwieder Jr., 89, a widower, of the 3800 block of Liberty Ridge Road, a retired federal engineer, died peacefully Nov. 29th in his residence.
Mr. Schwieder, a native of St. Louis, Mo., retired from the General Services Administration. He moved to Virginia Beach in 1969. He was a charter member of Holy Spirit Parish and the Holy Spirit Sunshine Club. He was a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus in the Father Habets Council, and was a long time member of the Virginia Beach unit of The United States Power Squadrons. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marguerite.
Survivors include two sisters and a brother, Marie Schwieder, Loretta Gardner and Virgil Schwieder, all of St. Louis; a son, William J. Schwieder III and daughter-in-law, Marsha of Virginia Beach; a daughter, Mary B. Downing and son-in-law, George of Owings, Md.; grandchildren, Karen M. Schwieder and Paula D. McCaleb of Virginia Beach and George S. Downing Jr. of Owings, Md.; a great-granddaughter, Mason Reed McCaleb of Virginia Beach; and numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews in the St. Louis area.
A funeral Mass will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church by Father Thomas Caroluzza. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to Mass. Memorial donations are requested to be made to Outreach Ministries, Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 1396 Lynnhaven Parkway, Virginia Beach, Va. 23456. Kellum Funeral Home, Bonney Road Chapel, is handling arrangements.
