There are no absolutes in high school football.
Well, maybe one.
``No one stops us offensively,'' said George Washington-Danville coach Ed Martin.
Martin's Eagles, who play Indian River on Saturday in a Group AAA Division 6 state semifinal at Great Bridge Middle School South, are averaging 36.7 points per game.
George Washington (10-2) runs the wishbone and boasts a pair of 1,000-yard rushers in Theomone Brooks and Keith Terry. Brooks, a two-time all-state pick, has rushed for more than 4,000 career yards.
``Theomone has good speed and a feel for the game,'' Martin said. ``He's started since he was a sophomore, which is pretty unusual for us.
``But the last couple of weeks, Terry has been the better of the two. In Theomone's defense, people have keyed on him. That's a mistake because Keith has great speed.''
If you're looking for keys, Martin said, start with quarterback John Poole. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound junior is a two-year starter and his reads on the pitch make the offense go.
Another key is an offensive line that averages 6-1 1/2 and 257 1/2 pounds. That includes tackle Chris Clark, the runt at 6-1, 205.
Martin calls center John Poole (6-3, 290) the best lineman he has ever coached.
Defensively the Eagles allow 13.3 points per game.
George Washington's two losses were to Person County, N.C., 16-15, and to Halifax County, 24-22.
The Eagles lost six fumbles against Person. The Halifax loss, in the last game of the regular season, is a mystery. ``We came out flat and went to sleep,'' Martin said.
George Washington's most notable victory was a 34-28 win over E.C. Glass. It was the Hilltoppers' only loss.
George Washington won state championships in 1968 and 1982. The Eagles were eliminated in the Northwest Region playoffs in 1991 and 1992 by eventual state champions Halifax and Pulaski, respectively.
Last year George Washington went 9-1 and didn't make the playoffs.
``We've been to the brink many time,'' Martin said. ``Now we've got to take advantage of it.'' by CNB
