Guy Friddell's Nov. 25 column gave me hope that other Americans will speak out against hate-mongering and be respectful of our elected officials.
Sen. Jesse Helms' comments about President Clinton's unpopularity with the military in North Carolina are a stunning example of intolerance and bad manners. In a country where freedom of speech has been hailed as our most precious birthright, Mr. Helms' comments point out how quickly we could lose that right if we fail to respect one another.
I am grateful to Mr. Friddell for reminding Mr. Helms and all hate-mongers that there are many Americans who cherish their right to differ.
