ANN S. COE

Ann Mayhew Sheldon Coe, 93, died on Sunday, Nov. 27, 1994. A native of Ventura County, Calif., she was a longtime Hampton resident.

A graduate of the University of Michigan, she worked as a social worker for the Los Angeles County School System before moving to Hampton in 1925. Mrs. Coe was a homemaker and active community volunteer. She held a variety of leadership roles with Peninsula YWCA, Newport News Woman's Club, American Red Cross, local and state PTA, Campfire Girls, USO and the Woman's Auxiliary of Grace Episcopal Church. She was the first woman named to an episcopal vestry on the Peninsula. In 1986, she was recognized by the VA Medical Center in Hampton for her 44 years of continuous volunteer service to veterans.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Bernard Coe, and their son, Jonathan M. Coe. Mrs. Coe is survived by three daughters, Catherine D. Lewis of Newport News, Ann Coe Christiansen of Bakersfield, Colo., and Phoebe Grylls of Grosse Pointe, Mich.; daughter-in-law, Anne Coe Inman of Jacksonville, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at St. John's Episcopal Church, 100 West Queens Way, Hampton. The family requests that memorials be made to Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Attn: Social Work Emergency Volunteer Service Fund, 100 Emancipation Drive, Hampton, Va. 23667, or a favorite charity.
