Police on Wednesday released a recording of the voice of a man who they think may have killed a taxicab driver Saturday night.
The recording was made by Langley Cabs of Hampton and captured the voice of a customer saying that he needed a cab to pick him up at a 7-Eleven store at LaSalle Avenue and Shell Road. The man identified himself as Anthony Jenkins, police believe, although the recording does not make clear the man's last name.
The man also asked in the recording that he be taken to the 4400 block of Chesapeake Ave.
``This is a tremendous investigative lead that we have,'' said Donnie Moore, spokesman for the Hampton Police Department. Moore said all of the region's television stations will be playing the tape and urged people to listen and call police if they can identify the speaker.
A passerby found cabbie David Mancil, 46, dead in his cab about 9:10 p.m. in the 3800 block of Chesapeake Ave. Mancil, of the 400 block of Ford Road, was found in the driver's seat. Moore would not say how many times or where Mancil had been shot. Moore said Mancil picked up his last fare at 8:16 p.m. Saturday. Police believe he was shot a short time later.
Police said they have no motive or suspect and asked that anyone with information call police at 727-6111 or Crime Line at 722-9800.
